Fireworks, Dance Band, Airshow, Previews and Premieres all Part of
the Second Annual Penobscot Bay Rendezvous – August 16-19
Stephens Waring Yacht Design to Debut new Daysailer at Wayfarer Marine
Stanley Paris, owner of Kiwi Spirit to Speak at Lyman-Morse
Camden, Maine The event is just a month away and organizers are busy putting together the final details on what promises to be another great event. To date forty-five sail and powerboats have signed up for the four-night three-day event co-hosted by Wayfarer Marine and Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding. Organizers expect between 60-70 boats to participate this year.
The participants will be feted at Lyman-Morse on Thursday, August 16th. Guests will be among the first to see Kiwi Spirit, the new Farr 63 being built for Stanley Paris whose goal with Kiwi Spirit is to break Dodge Morgan’s round the world, solo and unassisted record. Mr. Paris will also attend the event and give a presentation Thursday night. Also new to this year’s schedule is an airshow by the Texas Flying Legends, Friday August 17th at 1130. The public is encouraged to watch the show from the Rockland Breakwater. The airshow will be followed up by the start of the sailboat racing so a great opportunity to see some PBR action. Friday night’s post-event party for the regatta will be held at Rockland’s The Pearl on the Pier restaurant. Saturday night’s festivities will take place at Wayfarer Marine in Camden. Stephens Waring Yacht Design is bringing two stunning boats to the event: their newest design, the Rivolta Vintage 43 daysailer will debut at the event. Plus they are bringing Ginger another stunning design by SWYD. During cocktails on Saturday guests will get the first look at the new yacht plus and Ginger – a real treat.

The Penobscot Bay Rendezvous welcomes both the hard-core sailor as well as the recreational sailor who is not so competitive or concerned with getting around the marks first but would like to join in a new activity on the water. Last year’s fleet featured many first time racers and they are all coming back this year for more. Ted Smith the Rendezvous’ Primary Racing Officer is once again in charge of assigning everyone to his or her desired class so that everyone participates at his or her level of intensity. In other words, super yachts to daysailers are encouraged to participate. Bucket Rules will apply to the super yachts, and skippers can recruit rock stars and pile on the rail meat or you can spend the day in the cruising class, leisurely going from mark to mark and join in the festivities each evening.
Ben Ellison, long time Maine cruiser and photojournalist is the go-to-guy for the weekend’s powerboat owners and guests while accompanying the fleet aboard his Duffy 37 Gizmo. Powerboaters will participate in two days of a Photo Pursuit and a Poker Run. What is a Photo Pursuit? First of all it is not a race but a challenge to take memorable digital photographs from your boat. This is a great event whether you have been cruising Penobscot Bay for years or are visiting the area during your summer cruise.
The primary challenge of Friday’s Photo Pursuit will be to take fine pictures of each other's yachts while underway and framed by worthy local scenery like Owl's Head Light, with the bonus being that everyone should end up with shots of their own boat. Other photo opportunities on Friday will be the action around the Texas Flying Legends airshow, the sailboat race starts and the remarkable variety of working waterfront subjects to be found in the nooks and crannies of Rockland Harbor.
Saturday’s course will include more powerboat photography, this time at speed, as the fleet crosses the Bay to the Vinalhaven and North Haven area. This year PBR is adding a historical element to the Photo Pursuit and the Sunday Poker Run with the help of Penobscot Marine Museum's Ben Fuller. Part exploration, part artistic endeavor, part history, the two Bens will make sure that each day's Photo Pursuit is one to remember.
Each afternoon, contestants will download their best images with a team of Photo Pursuit Techies who will create a slide show of the day’s images. Well-known marine photographers Billy Black of Newport and Jamie Bloomquist of Maine Boats Homes & Harbors and US Harbors, as well as Lincolnville's Joseph Corrado and others, will choose the top three photographers for Sunday’s Awards Ceremony.
Last year the Penobscot Bay Rendezvous was recognized by Yachting Magazine as one of the Year’s Best events for good reason. The vast majority of last year’s fleet have signed up again this year as have the sponsors.
The $360 sailboat registration fee covers the following for two people:
- Boat registration for three days of on the water racing or power boat activities
- Thursday night's Opening Night barbecue and fireworks at Lyman-Morse
- Transportation to and from the dinner from Rockland Harbor
-Friday post-event party at The Pearl
-Saturday night Surf and Turf dinner dance at Wayfarer Marine
-Sunday afternoon Awards Ceremony at Wayfarer Marine
Powerboaters pay $460 as their ticket includes all of the above features plus brunch at North Haven’s Nebo Lodge. Extra guests are $230 each and include all of the above.
A limited number of Sail and Power Only Tickets will be offered for $180 per boat for those only interested in racing or the power boat events.

Inaugural Penobscot Bay Rendezvous a Smashing Success!
Camden, Maine: It was just what the organizers, participants and sponsors hoped for: great weather, a fantastic mix of boats, some challenging on the water conditions and three nights of fabulous parties. More than a good time was had by all who participated in the first Penobscot Bay Rendezvous, held August 18-21st and presented by Wayfarer Marine and Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding.
Lyman- Morse kicked off the event with yard tours of their impressive facility on the banks of the St. George’s River in Thomaston, ME. Maine Coast Catering served a delicious “all local fare” barbeque; local historian, Renny Stackpole provided the context of boatbuilding in the state of Maine with a brief talk before the night came to a brilliant finale with a fireworks display. Central Maine Pyrotechnics put on a show no one will forget!
After a forecast of “widespread fog” the skies Friday were bright blue and the breeze filled in nicely out of the south for the first race. A 1.8 mile weather leg greeted the competitors in three divisions, PHRF racing 1 and 2, double handed and cruising canvas.
As expected, Isobel, the magnificent new Stephens Waring custom 75-footer (sporting a PHRF rating of minus 69!) powered away and but was not able to save her time, with Hoi Ann (Center Harbor 50) finessing a corrected win and War Bride (J/124) second followed by Isobel in third.
In PHRF 2, the J/80 Chaise Lounge was first followed by the J/24 Havoc in second, and for variety, Cabot Lyman’s vintage Puffin was third.
The double-handed fleet saw the J/42 Bravo win the start and the first leg but then get run down by eventual winner, J/46 Abracadabra, and the well-sailed Sabre 386 Esmeralde in second, withBravo third. The top two boats were sailed by experienced (and very compatible) husband and wife teams.
Cruising canvas featured a wild variety of types and sizes from the C & C 110 sailed by the Lorraine family, to three 53-foot J/160s, to a Little Harbor 68 and the trophy laden veteran 48’ cat Frers designed-ketch,Acadia. Acadia took the honors followed by the J/160 True on her maiden voyage under command of Howie Hodgson and the relatively diminutive C & C 110 Hightail.
The powerboat fleet of nine departed Rockland on the southern Photo Pursuit course. The seven subjects ranged from the specific – Owl’s Head Lighthouse to the more general – a schooner and lobster boat.
The fleet arrived in Camden Harbor on time for the 5-8pm cocktail party at the Camden Yacht Club sponsored and hosted by Bettina Doulton of Cellardoor Winery and Lani Temple of Megunticook Market. Participants of the Rendezvous were by now fully convinced that they were taking part in a very different regatta as the food, wine and décor was savory, delicious, and elegant. As Ted Smith, PRO grinded out the results, the Photo Pursuit participants downloaded the images of the day and the results were mixed into a slide show for all to see. When the results were announced, the Class winners were awarded Yellow PBR jerseys and instructed to wear them the following day.
Saturday’s forecast was for 8 knots out of the south with some fog. Instead it was 20 knots and a wide range of visibility from 1/8 mile to unlimited sparkling seas.
PHRF 1 got one race off. WithIsobel taking first, followed by Sans Coulottes and War Bride. PHRF 2 was joined by the very experienced Snow Star team on their 40 Walstead (woodie). With the increase wind, Puffin garnered a 1, 2 followed by the J/24 with 1,3 and Snow Star with a 3, 2.
Double-handed saw the addition of the Irish Oyster 56 A Lady, who was passing through Camden on their circumnavigation. The stiff breeze was exactly to their liking and they won the day followed by the J/46 Abracadabra in second and the J/42 once again in third.
Cruising canvas once again saw the domination of Acadia, followed by the blue water proven Kanter 65 Te Mana in second and Machbuster (Little Harbor 68) also reveling in the big breeze.
The powerboats tracked down 7 subjects on the Photo Pursuits northern course. Images on the list to capture included the Islesboro Ferry, a seal and Grindle Point Lighthouse.
This was a Saturday night in Camden to remember, the evening was August-perfect reminding everyone why we love Maine so much. Making the night truly special, Isobel’s owners graciously invited the Rendezvous’ participants aboard to view Isobel during the cocktail hour.
A surf and turf buffet fortified guests before the band kicked up. This group probably would have danced to the hokey pokey (the energy was that electric). Boston’s Nightlife delivered with dance hit after hit. With the lights of Camden Harbor as a backdrop, the dance floor was packed as the group celebrated. Yellow jerseys were again handed out during a break in the dancing and guests admired the photography of the powerboat fleet. Penobscot Bay Rendezvous strives to be good neighbors, and the party ended with a full dance floor shouting out Steve Perry’s anthem of Don’t Stop Believing just a bit after 11pm (in accordance to Camden’s sound ordinance.)
Stephens Waring Yacht Design, one of nine Commodore sponsors of the event, hosted Saturday night’s dinner dance at Wayfarer Marine. Design partner Paul Waring had this to say: “There really was something for everyone over the four days: a dinner and fireworks display on Thursday, a well-appointed cocktail party on Friday, a superb dinner and dance Saturday and great PHRF racing as well as social activities for the powerboat fleet each day. The balance between competition and light social affairs in the evenings made for a wonderful success and we can't wait for next year's Rendezvous."
On Sunday, finally the forecasters were spot on – 15 to 20 knots of southerly and “patchy fog”. They were only a bit off on the fog which frequently dropped visibility to the 100 foot range adding a wonderful bit of excitement as some of the boats rocketed around the course at 10 knots plus.
PHRF 1 was having a great race until the leeward mark forced an abandonment and restart. The second attempt was won by the J/124 War Bride with the Beneteau 40.7 Sans Coulottes in second.
PHRF 2 saw the J/24Havoc with the win followed by the J/80 Chaise Lounge and Puffin in third.
In double handed, the J/42 Bravo finally found the pace and concentration necessary for the win, with the Oyster 56 A Lady in second and the J/46 Abracadabra in third.
The powerboat field wrapped up the weekend with a Poker Run. Specially designed PBR cards with sponsors logos had to be collected over the weekend from the hosts Cabot Lyman and Shane Flynn, a French & Braun, Camden’s local grocer and other stops. Sunday’s cards had to be collected from the PretiFlaherty and Merrill Lynch race marks. Cellardoor’s Bettina Doulton returned to deal out the cards and Liberty Call’s owner Marie Martus got up from the table with the winning hand and $100 gift certificate to Rockport’s hot spot Shepherd’s Pie. In order to not get arrested, PBR would like to remind Maine’s Gaming Authority that “no additional fees were paid to play or participate in the Poker Run.”
Awards Presentation wrapped up the weekend. With the awards themselves in keeping with the distinctive feel of the weekend. The First Place trophy was a custom designed buoy crafted in Sitka spruce and mahogany by Lyman-Morse’s Dan Mercuro; second place was a custom designed and crafted bronze medallion by local artist Richard Remsen and third place was a customized key ring from Maine’s ChartMetalworks. Over the weekend it became clear that some participants deserved to be recognized. Five of the 28 boats were helmed by women. Patti Spalding, owner of the J24 Havoc won her class and a $500 gift certificate to 412, one of Rockland’s finest boutiques for Best Performance by a Female Skipper. Ben Blake, single-handed his J160 Atlantic quite respectfully, and was awarded An Extra Hand. And Stephen Hyde of Cork, Ireland, owner and skipper of the Oyster 56 A Lady was given a souvenir snow globe and a couple of nights retreat at Lincolnville’s Point Lookout. He and his wife are completing a circumnavigation. Wayfarer Marine and Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding each awarded 5 gallons of paint to one of their owners.
Next year’s dates will be announced soon. Penobscot Bay Rendezvous is Maine’s newest sailing and power event presented by Wayfarer Marine and Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding. Super yachts, to classics to performance racers, Picnic Boats and lobster yachts are invited to enter. The Penobscot Bay Rendezvous is a celebration of boating and boatbuilding. SWYD's Isobel on the podium at inaugural Penobscot Bay Rendezvous
Belfast, Maine, USA – 25 August 2011. Stephens Waring Yacht Design's latest yacht Isobel continued its string of podium finishes at last weekend's inaugural Penobscot Bay Rendezvous in Maine, USA. The 75ft spirit of tradition fast cruiser claimed second overall on handicap behind War Bride, a 41ft J/124.
The inaugural three day regatta was a celebration of Maine boating and boatbuilding – this coupled with some first class racing and local dinners and entertainment made the event one for the calendar next year. SWYD was 'Commodore' sponsor of the event and hosted a dinner dance on the Saturday evening in Camden, design partner Paul Waring gives some insight: “There really was something for everyone over the four days: a dinner and fireworks display on Thursday, a well-appointed cocktail party on Friday, a superb dinner and dance Saturday and great PHRF racing as well as social activities for the powerboat fleet each day. The balance between competition and light social affairs in the evenings made for a wonderful success and we can't wait for next year's Rendezvous."
Isobelhas been busy since the launch on the 15 July at Brooklin Boat Yard. After a week of sail trials, she competed in the Castine Classic Yacht Race (1st in class), the Camden-Brooklin feeder race (2nd overall on corrected), the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta (1st overall on corrected) and the Shipyard Cup – a Bucket event – where she was the smallest yacht in the fleet. With August's racing successes behind them, her owners, the Schottes, are planning some East coast family cruising in the autumn.
“We are really pleased with how well Isobel is performing right out of the box and we’re thrilled with her success,” said design partner Bob Stephens. “The most rewarding part of the Rendezvous however, was welcoming regatta crews and guests onboard, fielding their questions and enjoying their feedback.”
Isobel was not the only SWYD design to turn heads in August, the 50ft Hoi An (launched in 2003)won the Down East Race Weekend and finished fourth at the Penobscot Bay Rendezvous last weekend after scoring a win in Friday’s race (the only one she competed in).
Satisfied that Isobel is living up to the owners' expectations, Paul Waring and Bob Stephens are back in the design office and concentrating on some exciting new projects, both little and large...

Information on Isobel
Isobel, the latest yacht to spring from the Stephens Waring Yacht Design drawing board, is a 75ft light displacement fast cruiser and the culmination of 14 months work from design to build completion. This yacht is the fourth designed by SWYD for owners, Mr and Mrs Schotte. “The reason I came back to the design team at Stephens Waring for another boat for my wife and I is their extraordinary talent for creating a magnificent boat that truly suits the – sometimes conflicting – objectives of the owners,” said Richard Schotte. Stephens Waring Yacht Design is well known for pushing the spirit of tradition design envelope and Isobel will not disappoint. Their latest yacht advances the edge of the class with a light-displacement hull form that pulls together characteristics from vessels as disparate as 19th century pilot boats and 21st century shorthanded racers. A continuous flow from cockpit through saloon to the accommodation below allows her crew to enjoy as much or as little exposure to the elements as they want. The powerful rig with square-top mainsail is fine-tuned for fast and comfortable short-handed sailing.

Penobscot Bay Rendezvous: Join the Party! August 18th-21st This new event for Sail and Power Sets Itself Apart from the Other Regattas And answers the Question: What is a Photo Pursuit?
Camden, Maine: Committee members of the Penobscot Bay Rendezvous have been working since February creating a 4-day sail and power event that would be memorable, inclusive, fun and top-notch in every respect.
The foundation of the event is the two hosts, Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding of Thomaston and Wayfarer Marine of Camden. Guests will have access to behind the scenes tours of these two world-class boatyards. Lyman-Morse will host Thursday night’s dinner featuring fireworks and Wayfarer Marine has hired a 7-piece dance band from Boston to provide the flare for Saturday night’s Surf and Turf dinner dance sponsored by Stephens Waring Yacht Design. The menus for all events are prepared by Maine Coast Catering and go way beyond hamburgers and hot dogs – go to http://www.penobscotbayrendezvous.com/Menu to check out the weekend’s menus.
The Committee also wanted to make sure the event welcomed both the hard-core sailor as well as the recreational sailor who is not so competitive or concerned with getting around the marks but would like to join in a new activity on the water. Ted Smith the Rendezvous’ Primary Racing Officer is charged with just such a task and the fleet will be offered racing, cruising canvas and double handed classes, so that everyone participates at his or her level of desired intensity. In other words, super yachts to daysailers are encouraged to participate. Bucket Rules will apply to the super yachts, and skippers can recruit rock stars and pile on the rail meat or you can spend the day leisurely going from mark to mark and join in the festivities each evening. Daily Skippers Meetings, a full complement of committee boats run by Smith and his experienced team will keep everyone on the same page, moving in the same direction and out of each other’s way.
The Sail Only ticket offers those that are only interested in racing to do just that for $180 per boat. A limited number of sail-only slots will be offered and the ticket includes Sunday’s awards party for the skipper and crew.
Everyone in the marine industry recognizes the importance of the powerboat market and the Rendezvous is no exception. But what to do with powerboats for 3-days on the water? Committee member Tom Babbitt of East Coast Yacht Sales had the answer. A Photo Pursuit. And what is a Photo Pursuit? First of all it is not a race but a scavenger hunt where photogenic targets are captured with a digital camera. Friday’s Photo Pursuit will feature targets surrounding Rockland Harbor and points north and east toward Camden Harbor. Saturday’s course will include targets surrounding Camden Harbor and as far north as Lincolnville Beach and Islesboro. Each night contestants will download their best images with a team of Photo Pursuit Techies who will in turn create a slide show of the day’s images. A panel of judges including photographers Billy Black and Camden’s Alison Langley, plus Dan Bookham Executive Director of the Lincolnville, Rockport and Camden Chamber of Commerce, and Charles Altschul President of the Maine Media Workshops + College and others will be charged with judging the work and the top three photographs will be announced at Sunday’s Awards Ceremony. Langley and Black are planning to attend the entire event giving the Rendezvous’ participants and photography enthusiasts a great opportunity to get feedback from the marine industry’s top photographers. A Poker Run will wrap up the event for powerboats on Sunday.
The $360 registration fee covers the following for two people:
- Boat registration for three days of on the water racing or power boat activities
- Thursday night's Opening Night barbecue and fireworks at Lyman-Morse
- Transportation to and from the dinner from Rockland Harbor
- Friday post-event party at the Camden Yacht Club sponsored by Cellardoor Winery and Megunticook Market
- Saturday morning breakfast at Wayfarer Marine
- Saturday night Surf and Turf dinner dance at Wayfarer Marine sponsored by StephensWaring Yacht Design
- Sunday morning breakfast at Wayfarer Marine
- Sunday afternoon Awards Ceremony at Wayfarer Marine
Extra guests are $180 each and include all of the above.
A limited number of Sail Only Tickets will be offered for $180 per boat for those only interested in racing or the power boat events.

About Isobel
An innovative and unique deck saloon fast cruiser, Isobel advances the edge of the Spirit of Tradition class. Her light-displacement hull form pulls together characteristics from vessels as disparate as 19th century pilot boats and 21st century shorthanded racers. A continuous flow from cockpit through saloon to the accommodation below allows her crew to enjoy as much or as little exposure to the elements as they desire. The powerful rig with square-top mainsail is fine-tuned for fast and comfortable short-handed sailing. This exciting new yacht is under construction by Brooklin Boat Yard, in Maine, and will be launched in July 2011.
